World Refugee Day is observed every year on 20th June in order to raise the public awareness about refugee’s situations throughout the world.
The annual celebration was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2000. Its first celebration was marked on 20th June, 2001.
According to the UN Refugee Agency, the number of refugees is at the highest ever recorded, with a staggering 65.6 million people currently fleeing from conflict or persecution.
This translates to roughly one in every 113 people who have been forcibly displaced. Such a figure is undeniably shocking and forces us to ponder how many refugees we must pass every day.
