The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has launched a Short Message Services (SMS) to report any form of violence meted against women candidates and their supporters during elections.
The Hotline Dubbed “SEMA USIKIKE” on number 21661 will work on a real time basis during this electoral period and four months after the polls by victims and witnesses of electoral violence.
Speaking yesterday during the launch, Fida Kenya chair, Josephine Wambua said despite many women coming out to seek elective posts, there are concerns over increased rate of violence against them.
“Several cases of violence against women aspirants have been reported countrywide and to the Fida Kenya office,” she said adding that they are particularly alarmed by the lack of swift action by security agencies.
She said the SMS service is “free and friendly” with FIDA lawyers expected to immediately respond to the text and inform the nearest police station for action. She added that the lawyers who have set offices in Mombasa, Nairobi and Kisumu will follow up and provide legal aid. -KNA
