Tension remained high in Kyuso sub-county in Kitui after heavily armed bandits raided a village on Wednesday night and made away with unknown number of livestock.

The raiders believed to be herdsmen from North Eastern region stormed Mandongoi area in Ngomeni Ward killing one person before escaping with the animals.

A police officer, who colleagues say disappeared as the security team engaged the bandits in a gun battle, could also not be accounted for by the time of going to press.

Ngomeni MCA Jacob Maundu said residents have fled their homes following the attack. He urged security operatives to intensify patrols along Kitui-Tana River border that has become volatile in the recent past.

Kitui county Commissioner Boaz Cherutich urged residents to remain calm as urgent measures have been taken to restore law and order.

Meanwhile, a Kitui court has referred a case in which 365 families whose relatives have been killed or maimed by bandits along Kitui- Tana River counties border to Garissa court.

High Court judge Lilian Mutende said the case instigated by Mwingi Central Parliamentary aspirant Gideon Mulyungi cannot be heard in Kitui courts as it lacks jurisdiction to preside land and environmental issues. The families are claiming compensation from the National government for losses caused by bandit attacks.
