The government has officially opened the Sh1.5 billion Mbita causeway bridge in Homa Bay county.

The bridge will connect residents of Mbita mainland and Rusinga island as well as ease travel to Remba, Takawiri, Ringiti, Mfangano and Kiwa islands.

“The remaining work includes establishing of road furniture which includes road signs and guard rails,” said Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) manager in charge of design Samuel Ogege.

Speaking when the officials from the authority inspected the project, Ogege said some of the completed works include the construction of a 160m-long and 10m-wide bridge which will also facilitate the movement of water vessels under it. The height of the bridge from the water surface is eight metres.

“The bridge is designed in such a way that it will allow ferries and other water vessels except ships, which are 40m wide and less than 8m high, to pass under,” he said.

The construction work funded by Kenyan and Spanish governments kicked off in March 2013 and was expected to end in August 2014, but suffered delay over change of design.

“We have lost many lives from a lack of suitable means of crossing this lake,” said Kennedy Odhiambo, a resident. Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo is one of the victims, losing the father Rarison Odhiambo to the water.
