The Machakos governor seat contest in August will be a repeat of the 2013 race which pitted incumbent Alfred Mutua against the then Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) party leader Wavinya Ndeti.
On Sunday night, Wavinya was declared the winner of the bitterly contested Wiper ticket, between her and deputy governor Bernard Kiala. During the exercise, Wavinya garnered 299,312 votes against Kiala’s 4,663, who has since dismissed the polls terming them a sham.
“The residents were lured into an exercise that had already been barred by court,” he said. Wiper chief executive officer Gerald Siso maintains that he did not receive any court order and the election was legal.
But Kiala claims he is in possession of a video clip of Siso receiving the injunction on Saturday. In the court order, Kiala argues that he will not get justice in the nominations until an agreement that was inked between Wiper party and CCU to give Wavinya a direct ticket is nullified.
According to the Wiper-CCU coalition agreement seen by People Daily, it states that “the coalition partners agree to nominate Hon Wavinya Ndeti to be the Wiper gubernatorial candidate for Machakos county to participate in the August 8, 2017 General Election or whichever date as they shall be held”.
The coalition document further states that Wavinya will join Wiper on recommendation of the CCU NEC and will run as the party’s gubernatorial candidate with her running mate Peter Mathuki.
The Political Parties Tribunal will deliberate on the matter on Wednesday and if Kiala wins, then Wavinya’s candidature will be null and void. But in her acceptance speech, Wavinya called on Kiala to team up with her and deliver the seat from Maendeleo Chap Chap party leader Alfred Mutua.
