Nairobi Jubilee governor aspirant bishop Margaret Wanjiru was last evening arrested and locked up at Parklands Police Station for storming a polling station and destroying some ballot papers.

The bishop had stormed City Park polling station in Karura Ward where she found some ballot papers with names of aspirants in Dagoretti North constituency. Karura Ward is in Westlands constituency.

A furious Wanjiru protested the presence of the ballot boxes in a wrong constituency leading to some agitated voters to start destroying them. She was then whisked to Parklands Police Station and by the time of going to the press, she was yet to be released.

Earlier, long  queues, missing names as well as various irregularities had  characterised the  Jubilee Party primaries in Nairobi county.

Although the exercise ran smoothly in most of the constituencies within the county, voters who had queued since 5am complained that some of their names were missing in both the party and the 2013 Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) register as well as there were delays in the opening of polling stations.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko who is vying for governor became a causality as his name was among those missing from the party register when he went to cast his vote at the Bidii Primary School in Makadara constituency but was allowed to vote as he had his identity card.

The many complaints by the voters came after Jubilee Party National Elections Board chairman Andrew Musangi made clear that in Nairobi, only those on the party register would get to vote in the exercise.

Governorship aspirants Peter Kenneth and Sonko expressed displeasure at the whole process with Sonko saying his supporters were not captured in the party polling register while Kenneth said the elderly were barred from the exercise.

A spot check by the  People Daily in Roysambu constituency found disgruntled voters venting their anger at presiding officers. They claimed their names had been struck off the register in areas considered “strongholds” of their favourite aspirant, an allegation returning officers vehemently disputed.

But despite some polling stations having a smooth start other stations were hit with violence that saw Sonko’s vehicle being stoned by hooligans in Supaloaf Primary School.
