Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has threatened that the Opposition could move an impeachment motion against President Uhuru Kenyatta over what he termed ‘abuse of his presidential powers’ in dealing with Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
He claimed the ongoing cases against Joho by various government agencies are nothing but the President trying to settle political scores using state machinery. “What the President is doing on the Governor of Mombasa is dictatorial and illegal.
We will push for an impeachment if he continues abusing his presidential powers,” said Raila. Addressing hundreds of members of the Bunge La Mwananchi caucus at Orange House Nairobi yesterday, the former premier said the Opposition will also consider calling for a mass action against the Head of State if Joho’s intimidation persists, adding that they will not sit and watch as their members are being intimidated and frustrated.
Joho’s woes with the President started last year when the governor criticised the Jubilee government of doing nothing for the coastal region people accusing him of launching either county government projects or the grand-coalition projects.
The ODM leader was confident of Nasa forming the next government saying they have the numbers to win the August 8 General Election. He said Nasa will have at least 10 people manning polling stations to protect the votes and ensure no mischief by election officials.
Raila said Nasa will set up a parallel tallying centre claiming the law allows for such and such that the practice is allowed all over the world. “Political parties are allowed to have tallying centers, this is the tradition all over the world. In America, you all see how the media relay real time election results on Television, that should be the case here in Kenya,” he said.
