Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i has put on notice school principals and board members over mismanagement of resources meant for their institutions.
He said money allocated by his ministry for various projects are diverted to paying allowances, which he said is against policy.
Speaking at Sironga Girls National School on Friday, Matiang’i directed auditors and the county directors to immediately bring to book those misappropriating funds, saying some schools had received more than Sh50 million for infrastructure but have not constructed a single structure.
He warned culprits swindling public funds meant to improve the quality of education in their institutions could face the full force of the law.
He also re-affirmed commitment to ensuring cheating in exams ends saying his ministry had put in place tough measures to combat the vice.
He challenged the youth to join polytechnic institutions which he said were guaranteeing employment upon graduation. The CS also denied allegations that his ministry and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) were victimising teachers through wrongful punitive measures.
He said thorough investigation are carried out before action is taken against any teacher. Matiang’i (pictured) challenged the teachers unions to also focus on how to improve the education standards instead of using much of their time on negative criticism.
He said the union’s noises will not improve but decline education standards unless they were had susbstance. Matiang’i who was accompanied Nyamira county director of education Nelson Sifuna gave the ministry’s donation of Sh14 million to the institution for the construction of a new dormitory to ease congestion as he opened a new science lab.
