Embattled chairperson of the National Assembly Committee on National Security and Administration Asman Kamama will be removed from the position following claims that he was using it to intimidate State officers in the violent Baringo county.
Kamama’s Tiaty constituency has been hit by a spate of violent clashes which have left scores dead and others injured. Pressure has been mounting on Kamama to quit the position but he has remained adamant, maintaining that he was not involved in the violence or in any way incited the locals.
Yesterday, Leader of Majority Aden Duale confirmed that the Jubilee leadership had resolved to have Kamama removed from the position. Reports have it that Kamama will swap positions with the chair of the Energy Committee Jamleck Kamau, though Duale did not confirm the reports.
Duale spoke even as Pressure on Kamama to be replaced as the chairperson of the committee continued to pile outside the precincts of parliament as a petition was presented to Parliament to address state of security in Baringo.
Addressing the media yesterday at the Parliament Building, the Baringo Human Rights Consortium in conjunction with the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) said that the sporadic incidents of insecurity by armed bandits are connected to Kamama.
The two bodies further accused Kamama of drastically increasing insecurity since his entry as the Member of Parliament for Tiaty Constituency in 2002.
KHRC Deputy Executive Director Davis Malombe said that the latest incidents of insecurity in Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet and Laikipia counties are part of a long history of violence instigated by politicians who have incited different communities against each other.
“It is high that government placed the Kenya Defense Forces on the ground because clearly, the raids are ongoing despite police deployment in the area. This insecurity is caused by politics and should be brought to a stop immediately, “said Malombe.
Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has been demanding that Kamama resign from the committee he chairs for the ongoing security operation in the county to be successful.
Moi said that after accusations were made against Kamama, he should relinquish his post so as not to been seen to be interfering with the operation.
Kamama has also denied of having been behind the gruesome murders of two politicians in his constituency. Residents of Baringo South and North had also joined in asking Kamama to record a statement with police about the attacks but the MP distanced himself from them saying he knows nothing about them.
Senator Moi, also the Kanu leader, said that although some leaders from the Pokot community affiliated to Kanu have opposed the operation, they were not talking on his behalf or the party.
“Kenyans should know that I am the driver of a bus called Kanu and whatever they say does not mean that they are representing my opinion.
“The operation should be done in the insecurity-prone areas but Kamama should resign first as the security parliamentary committee chairman for the operation to be successful,” he added.
He also distanced himself from claims that he is opposing the operation, saying it has his full support. “My opponents have taken advantage to spread propaganda that I am opposing the disarmament exercise but I want to put it clear that bandits should be arrested like yesterday to restore law and order in the volatile areas in Baringo and Kerio Valley,” said Moi.
He also criticised the government for being “lenient” on bandits, noting that since the operation started a week ago, none of them has been arrested.
“It seems the government is doing a public relations exercise on the much-hyped operation because we are yet to hear of any arrests one week after the exercise commenced.
