The Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) has urged parties to conduct their primaries in good time to allow it ample time to settle disputes.
This is after it emerged that courts are likely to only handle Presidential petitions, leaving all cases to the dispute tribunal. PPDT said political disputes will be resolved within 90 days, or less.
Tribunal chairman Kyalo Mbobu said the tribunal is sourcing for more funds to hire extra staff in readiness of the August 8 General Election. Speaking during a breakfast meeting yesterday in Nairobi, Mbobu said the additional staff will help expedite hearing and determination of disputes from political parties.
“Given most cases are going to be handled by us, we hope the additional staff will be able to manage it in good time, “ he said. According to IEBC timelines, dispute resolution by political parties and PPDT will run from April 20 to May 19.
Two weeks Parties will have the first two weeks to handle their disputes internally, while the tribunal will take over unresolved cases which they will have to handle within the remaining two weeks.
“There is a proposal to allow for appointment of ad-hoc committee members which will be advantageous during the party primaries,” said Mbobu.
