Fear gripped residents of Nairobi’s Karen suburb after a stray lion was spotted in the area. The deadly carnivore was spotted at Hardy estate yesterday morning triggering fear among residents and workers, some who stayed indoors. Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) was alerted and dispatched a team to track down the cat before it could injure unsuspecting residents.
However, tracking the animal was not a walk in the park for KWS officers who spent hours combing the expansive Karen neighbourhood in a desperate bid to capture it. The People Daily caught up with Peter Lokirir reinforcing a fence to avert any possible access of the lion to his master’s fence.
“My boss told me to seal any possible space on the fence to keep the lions at bay,” he said. Through its Twitter account, KWS urged the public to be vigilant and exercise caution and report any sighting of the stray animal in the area.
In mid-February, two lions spent a day wandering through Kibera, before returning to the park, and days later more lions were spotted in town. On March 31, a lion believed to have wandered from the park was shot and killed after it attacked a man on the Isinya-Kiserian road.
