Four group ranches in the semi-arid Ganze sub-county of Kilifi county have been identified as the cause of conflicts between local residents and pastoralists from Tana River county and North Eastern region.
Kilifi County Commissioner Joseph Keter said Dola, Mapotea, Mnagoni and Birya ranches with a combined acreage of 175,478 and covering four locations will be dissolved.
“As locals, you are automatic members and shareholders of the ranches, yet some of you have not been benefiting,” he said. He directed for meeting between ranch directors and other shareholders to discuss dissolution.
“The theme should be how the ranches will be dissolved after the grace period of three months from now. The land will then be returned to the communities. But, we will hold several meetings to collect views from residents,” he said.
