Interior Cabinet secretary Maj Gen (rtd) Joseph Nkaissery has rubbished claims he is threatening chiefs with sacking if they fail to support the government.

The CS said he was only performing his duties by keeping chiefs, who fall under his docket, on their toes. “The registration of persons and the on-going voter registration are National government functions,” he said.

Cord leader Raila Odinga was quoted in a section of the media claiming Nkaissery was intimidating chiefs in the ongoing mass voter registration exercise if they fail to support the government.

“I am threatening you? The CS asked about 200 chiefs and their assistants from Nyandarua county when he addressed them at Ol Kalou Catholic Church hall at the wekend.

An uproar of “No! No!” rented the air as the administrators responded. Nkaissery told them to be careful with some leaders from the Opposition, noting that they had recommended scraping off of the provincial administration during the Constitution-making process.

The CS asked them to double their efforts in ensuring that the 257,000 eligible voters are registered. “Nyandarua county has 257,000 people with IDs but they are not registered as voters.

As of yesterday (Friday) only 9,000 voters had been registered. Let’s work jointly to enlist all these voters,” he said. Nkaissery was accompanied by Nyandarua County Commissioner Samuel Wanjohi, Governor Daniel Waithaka among others. —KNA
