A woman who was arrested over possession of materials used to make explosives will be detained for three days to allow police more time to probe the suspect in relation to terrorism activities in the country.

Ferooz Abubakar was arrested in Bondeni area on Saturday, with detonators, explosive boosters, eight mobile phones and several sim cards.

Terror attack The Anti-Terror Police Unit said she may have been planning to carry out a terror attack. Officers said Abubakar is the wife of Hemed Skanda, the main suspect behind the 2014 attack at Reef hotel where the attackers used samples of chemicals to trigger explosives through a remote-controlled device or a mobile phone signal.

State prosecutor Eugene Wangila had requested the court to allow police to detain the suspect for 14 days. Wangila informed the court that her other associates were still at large and therefore police needed more time to gather information from her on the whereabouts of her accomplices, who are likely to continue extending the activities of the al Shaabab group and endangering the lives of the public.

However, Mombasa principal magistrate Henry Nyakweba said three days were enough for police to interrogate the woman because she has been in police custody since Saturday.
