Kelly Ateku, 17, excels in exams.

Seventeen-year-old Kelly Ateku from Ebukhaya village, Vihiga, surprised residents after he braved a myriad of problems to emerge the best student in last year’s KCSE exam by scoring an A- (minus).

During his four years at Nyang’ori Boys’ High School, Ateku was ranked among the below average students and his outstanding performance shocked teachers, relative sand villagers. Ateku, who aspires to pursue electrical engineering says his below average performance every end of the term did not discourage him.

“I am very happy to emerge the best candidate from Nyang’ori Boys’ High School. I used to perform dismally but I never gave up. I worked hard and now I am top of my school.

I want to pursue electrical engineering course at the university,” said Ateku. He adds that despite being sent home for lack of fees, he continued doing his studies at home and was determined to complete his secondary education.

Ateku attributed his success to God, hard work and a spirit of never giving up. His father, Moses Ateku, said his son has made him proud. “I never imagined such a moment. We are elated and thankful to God for my son’s success,” he said.
