A man believed to have been guarding firearms stolen at Booker Police Post in Mumias a fortnight ago was shot dead inside a sugarcane farm during a police operation yesterday.
The suspect, said to have been stationed nearby ostensibly to guard the six guns and ammunation, fell under a hail of bullets after challenging officers engaged in the operation within the Mumias Sugar Company-owned farm near Mayoni market.
Police amnesty Western Region Police Commandant Moses Ombati said the slain suspect was in the company of three others who managed to escape into the lush green plantation but said police know their identities and urged them to surrender.
He said six G3 rifles and 154 bullets were recovered yesterday to add to the rifle loaded with 15 bullets recovered last week.
The suspects, including a boda boda rider said to have been in possession of the weapon, which they abandoned after panicking during a botched robbery mission are in police custody at the Kakamega Police Station.
Ombati thanked the public for cooperation, which he said led to the recovery of the arsenal. At the same time, Ezekiel Juma, a police officer, is recovering at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, Eldoret following the police post raid.
Yesterday, Ombati said two of the recovered rifles were in perfect condition implying they were in constant use in criminal activities, while four others were rusty.
