Joy for a 28-year-old Nakuru mother of triplets, which had threatened to turn into agony after she was detained at a private hospital for non-payment, was restored when area Women’s Representative Mary Mbugua offered to pay the bill.
Grace Wangari checked into St Mary’s Hospital, a private facility, where she successfully delivered the triple bundle of joy. With doctors at the facility confirming that all the three babies were in good health, Wangari’s mind immediately switched to the cost of the operation.
Wangari initially went to Nakuru Level Five Hospital and was referred to the private institution following the strike by medics. “At the Provincial General Hospital I was told to seek assistance at a private hospital. A well-wisher spotted me helpless at the casualty section and brought me here immediately,” she said.
Unlike government health facilities which offer free maternity services, private clinics charge fees unaffordable to ordinary folks like Wangari. And the arrival of the triplets was something no one saw coming. Not even the doctors who examined her during pregnancy.
“I had gone for a scan and was informed I was carrying twins. I am still in shock not believing I delivered healthy triplets. We had only planned for two,” Wangari said unable to hold back tears of joy.
The first baby was delivered normally, after which a Cesarean Section was performed to deliver the other two. Baby Victor, who was delivered first, weighed 2.4kg while babies Benson and Lucy weighed 1.6 and 1.7kgs respectively.
According to her nurse, Pauline, the mother and the babies are in stable condition though Wangari is not yet able to breastfeed them all. “The four are in good health. At the moment Wangari is not in a position to produce sufficient milk for them all.
One of them is being fed with special canned milk,”she said. Their joy was, however, shortlived as the couple was unable to foot the medical bill which quickly rose to Sh24, 000. “I am jobless and my husband does menial jobs.
The amount is too high for us and thus we are calling for help from well-wishers,” she initially said, while appealing for assistance. Wangari and her children were discharged on Sunday but had remained at the facility over the bill.
The MP came to her rescue and paid it. Mbugua urged the government to ensure the ongoing strike by medics is resolved to avert more suffering of innocent citizens.
