The Government will spend Sh5.4 billion by January in drought mitigation, Devolution Cabinet secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has said.
Appearing before Senate devolution committee yesterday, the CS said the National Treasury released the first batch of the funds early this month which is being used by the inter-ministerial technical committee on drought.
He said among the affected people, 1.3 million are from the arid and semi-arid areas while 200,000 are in other counties. Kiunjuri told the committee chaired by Wilfred Lesan (Bomet) that the technical committee has already met Governors in the hunger-stricken counties to forge a partnership formula for eradicating the calamity.
He also said the State Department for Special Programmes has this month dispatched 52,900 bags of maize, 25,200 bags of beans, 51,600 bags of rice and 6,210 cartons of oil countrywide.
He said the drought contingency plans were activated in July, adding that Sh145 million was sourced from the European Union.
He added that the ministry is in the process of purchasing two million bags of maize to replenish the current stock to ensure there is enough food to last to June 2017.
