The government will hold accounting officers of public entities personally liable for any incident of corruption within their jurisdictions, Attorney General, Githu Muigai warned yesterday.

He said the government will not tolerate any form of corruption or unethical conduct by any public official regardless of their status.

Githu said his office will consider keenly a proposal by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) that all appointment letters for accounting officers include corruption prevention as one of the terms of the contract, the breach of which should attract a dismissal or other appropriate sanctions.

The government, he said, has decided that those who accept to hold public office whether through an election or appointment must be prepared to operate within the Constitution 2010 and other integrity law adding that upholding integrity in duties is not a choice but a duty that will be fully enforced.

“If you are a chief executive officer and you are tolerating corruption in your institution, then you have no business being there,” affirmed Githu.

“All of us must appreciate that Kenya cannot achieve its Vision 2030 goals and the UN Sustainable Development Goals unless the men and women who are entrusted with public office uphold high standards of integrity,” he said.

Githu’s statement was delivered by State Law office Director, Legal Affairs, John Tuta yesterday during the opening of a workshop on responsible commissions on implementation of Chapter Six of the Constitution in Nairobi .
