Information Communication Technology Cabinet secretary Joe Mucheru (pictured) has dismissed allegations by Opposition leaders that he is involved in plans to rig the 2017 General Election.
He accused the Cord management team of attempting to whip up public emotions to gain sympathy, saying the claims are baseless. In a statement, issued by the ICT’s communication director Browne Kutswa, the CS said the government is committed and focused on its people-centred development agenda as well as delivering a free and fair electoral process.
“The allegations by senators James Orengo and Johnstone Muthama and their colleagues are malicious, false and baseless and should be treated with the contempt they deserve. We will not be dissuaded by sideshows designed to whip up public emotions and sympathy,” he said.
They have no evidence to prove what they are saying because what they are accusing us of is not true and they know it,” he added. The Cord management team alleged that Mucheru and Deputy President William Ruto held secret meetings with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials to rig next year’s polls.
They claimed the two are at the centre stage of blocking full implementation of the recently passed electoral laws. During a press briefing on Tuesday, they also claimed pressure is being exerted on the IEBC nomination panel to manipulate the choice of the new commissioners.
Meanwhile, Amani National Congress (ANC) has accused the Jubilee administration of intending to raid public coffers, through IEBC, to fund its nominations.
National organising secretary Basil Mwakiringo termed plans by the party to use the commission to fund its activities as mischievous, outrageous, misplaced and an insult to Kenyans. He said it is a mockery that Jubilee wants IEBC to oversee its nominations when it still cannot account for money from the Political Parties Fund.
