The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed that seven governors have been recommended for charges over corruption allegations. According to CEO Halakhe Waqo, two have already faced charges. He, however, declined to give names of the governors.

Already, Garissa governor Nadhif Jamaa has been arraigned in court for abuse of office alongside some of his county executives. Governors Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a), Evans Kidero (Nairobi) and Godana Doyo (Isiolo) have stalled EACC’s move to prosecute them by acquiring court injunctions.

This comes as the anti-graft body yesterday declared all the 47 counties as dens of corruption, where county officials engage in grave plunder of public resources. Speaking during the opening of a workshop in Mombasa, Waqo said there are several cases of corruption being investigated in the counties.

“We have recommended some public officials for charges while some have already been charged,” said Waqo who was accompanied by his vice-chair Sophia Lepuchirit. The anti-graft boss said the departments in which corruption is prevalent include procurement, finance, public service boards, as well as roads and public works.

He said the specific forms of corruption have been evident in procurement irregularities, mismanagement of finances, conflict of interest in awarding tenders, bribery, forgery of documents, political influence in tendering, hiring of unqualified staff, theft of revenue collected, shoddy construction of roads and bridges among others.

He said those accused of engaging in the pillage of resources include MCAs. “Devolution was intended not to create few powerful and rich individuals but for mwananchi to access resource.

While the anti-graft body has been accused of alleged incapability to curb corruption, Waqo absolved the commission saying in some instances, the public have appeared to pose an obstacle in the war against graft by defending corrupt leaders.
