Motorists are opposed to the government’s plan to introduce toll stations on five highways. The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) says re-introducing the stations would amount to double taxation.
“The government through the Kenya National Highways Authority, intends to reintroduce retrogressive, oppressive and unconstitutional toll. It is unjustifiable, unacceptable and absurd.
Putting toll booths on already complete roads is a big no and motorists will never allow that to happen,” MAK chairman Peter Murima said.
Nairobi-Mombasa highway, Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit, Thika Road, Nairobi’s Southern bypass and a second Nyali bridge in Mombasa are targeted in the plan. MAK has turned down an invitation to attend a two-day investor conference in protest of the government’s intentions.
The conference is expected to bring together government officials and private investors to discuss details of the planned tolling.
