Makueni County government and Ahadi Kenya Trust have partnered to fight hunger amongst the jigger-infested families in the county.
Speaking during an anti-jigger campaign in Tawa, Mbooni at the weekend, Ahadi Kenya Trust chief executive Stanely Kamau said the war on both jigger infestation and food shortage require efforts of all Kenyans. “I want to challenge county governments to set up food banks to avert perennial hunger in future,” said Kamau, adding that the trend of soliciting food aid whenever famine strikes is embarrassing.
Governor Kivutha Kibwana and his wife Nazi Kivutha, who heads SHINA Foundation, pledged to work with Ahadi Kenya to ensure no child fails to attain education due to Jigger and hunger.
Earlier, Kivutha had participated in an exercise to clean and disinfect hundreds of jigger-infested pupils from various schools. “ I was once a jigger victim and I know what it means.”
The jigger menace has adversely affected education performance in worst hit areas such as Mbooni, Kaiti and Kilome constituencies.
