Embattled Health Cabinet secretary Cleopa Mailu heeded calls by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives and presented himself to respond to arising queries over alleged Sh3.1 billion scandal in his ministry.
Mailu reported at EACC headquarters at 5.45am yesterday and was interrogated for over six hours, a day after his Principal secretary Nicholas Muraguri was also questioned. The CS has previously indicated that no money was lost but revealed that he would appoint an independent auditor to re-evaluate the draft audit report that leaked to the public.
“I met the team that asked I come and write a statement, I have spent close to six hours and responded to questions, I put my statement across and I now await their investigations and then we take it from there.” Mailu told the media after interrogation shortly after 2pm.
“It was a very cordial interview. We went through all the issues they wanted and I provided them with answers where I could and I believe they will get the rest from the documents I have submitted to them,” Mailu added.
Meanwhile, Muraguri yesterday trashed claims of embezzlement of Sh3.1 billion in the Financial Year 2016/17, maintaining that interim audit reports were leaked to the media before thorough confirmation and response was done by the ministry.
Appearing before the National Assembly Health committee yesterday, Muraguri said that procedural audit process not followed according to the law, necessitating the circus of figures being peddled around to blow whistle of graft that never was.
He told the committee chaired by Kitui South MP Rachael Nyamai that the ministry had a supplementary budget of Sh800 million for implementation of slum upgrading programme but the figure was slashed by Parliament to Sh270 million.
