Thousands flee South Sudan.

The government has protested the dismissal of Lt. General Johnson Mogoa Kimani Ondieki, as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Foreign Affairs Cabinet secretary Amb. Amina Mohamed said deployment of Kenyan troops in South Sudan is no longer tenable and is inimical to their safety and well-being.

“The government has decided to withdraw its troops currently deployed in South Sudan,” said the CS. They also discontinued plans to contribute to the Regional Protection Force and disengage from the South Sudan Peace Process.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday sacked the commander of the peacekeeping force in South Sudan following a damning report showing failure to protect civilians during violence earlier this year in Juba. The UN mission, known as UNMISS, has 16,000 troops deployed in South Sudan, which has been at war since 2013.
