President Uhuru Kenyatta has told off Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko over controversial remarks he made at a funeral service last week. Uhuru said he remains the President, whether in or out of the country, adding that he has delegated his role only once when he was required to appear before the International Criminal Court.
“Do not bother with what people say at funerals or other occasions. I have only left the seat once when they took me to some funny court and they made me sign a piece of paper for my Deputy to act as President… So whether I am in Togo or elsewhere I am still the President of this country,” Uhuru said at State House yesterday.
Sonko, was on Sunday evening grilled for about two hours by Directorate of Criminal Investigations officers for declaring himself the acting president last Friday. He made the remarks at a funeral service of Wavinya Ndeti’s husband in Athi River.
Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko had ordered that Sonko be interrogated over his remarks. He wrote to Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet, calling for “urgent investigations and the file be urgently forwarded to his office for appropriate action.
