Meru Governor Peter Munya and Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi were yesterday embroiled in a political supremacy battle before the Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee.
Munya had appeared before the committee to respond to Auditor General’s queries on funds management for the Financial Year 2013/14. Wamatangi accusing Munya of undermining the committee and insulting him at a public forum.
The senator said all governors who snub the committee summons should be produced in handcuffs by the Inspector General of Police. He said Munya responded by belittling the watchdog committee, saying “they only yap and fail to act”.
“I spoke as a member of this committee and they are issues that are true to this committee. But the Governor went further saying ‘Senator Wamatangi ni mkora wa kawaida ambaye ametembea huku Meru (is a common conman visiting the county of Meru)’.”
He continued: “I am the Senator of Kiambu County and a member of this committee but not a mkora of kawaida”. The committee chairman and Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o intervened to have the matter settled later but senators Martha Wangari (Nominated) and Muriuki Karue (Nyandarua) said it was appropriate for Munya to respond to Wamatangi’s claims. Munya termed the claims by Wamatangi misplaced and irrelevant to the committee.
