Services at the Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (Kimawasco) offices in Kilifi town came to a standstill yesterday when the workers downed their tools over poor management.

The more than 100 workers blocked the entrance to the offices by setting several tyres on fire at the gate. Kenya Food and Alliance Workers Union Kilifi branch secretary Bernard Mzungu accused the management of financial mismanagement and harassment of junior staff.

The union called for the overhaul of the board of management saying it was allegedly mistreating and arbitrarily sacking workers. Kilifi county executive committee member for Water Kiringi Mwachitu urged the workers to resume their duties as they discuss the matter with their leaders.

“I know you are aggrieved and you want to communicate something, but we need to sit down and talk so that we can get a lasting solution. Let me meet with your officials so that I can listen to your grievances before meeting with the management,” he said.
