Kakamega senator Boni Khalwale.

Police on Friday dispersed a demonstration by striking nurses in Kakamega town to press the county government to address selective promotions and discriminatory.

The protest, led by Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary-General Seth Panyako - joined by local Senator Boni Khalwale - demanded that the county government stops hiring nurses on contracts and improve terms of employment.

There was a brief scuffle between police boss Jonah Sitienei and Khalwale's aides when they tried to block the legislator from addressing the protesters.

Khalwale termed as cowardly attempts by the county government to muzzle KNUN officials and warned that the battle to place healthcare services under good management had just began.

He called on Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to address the nurses’ grievances. Heavy security had been deployed at the governor’s offices to keep off the demonstrators.
