The management of Itierio Boys Extra County Boarding Secondary School in Kisii county has said the fate of five students accused of torching seven dormitories lies with Education Cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i.

The school’s principal Isaac Okeyo said he has obtained a court order to re-admit the students Brian Chengo, Ezra Ogendo, Christopher Mong’are, Erichi Amenyi and Nelson Morara and is awaiting a communication from the CS.

Kisii senior resident magistrate, SK Njoro gave the order after the students’ lawyers Gideon Nyambati, Job Obure and Philemon Ochwangi argued that the learners’ education is fundamental and nobody should interfere with it.

The students were charged that on June 26, they willfully and unlawfully torched dormitories valued at Sh14.9 million, charges they denied and were released on a Sh20,000 bond each. Onjoro said the accused are innocent until proven guilty and urged the school administration to treat them as such until the case is heard and determined.

“The school has no problem re-admitting the students. But we fear for their safety owing to the hostility their colleagues could have towards them,” said Okeyo.
