President Uhuru Kenyatta starts a week-long tour of the Coast today during which time he is expected to launch another charm offensive to sell the new Jubilee Party in the region hitherto perceived an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) stronghold. The President will also launch several development projects in Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu.
The trip comes in the wake of renewed efforts by the Jubilee to intensify campaigns to win support in the region as the next General Election approaches. Today, the President is expected to open the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) show at Mkomani and later issue title deeds to squatters in different areas of the Coast region.
Uhuru will tomorrow commission phase one of the Mombasa Port Second Container Terminal (CT2) which consists of two berths, number 20 with a quay length of 210 metres and a draft of 12 meters to serve medium sized vessels and berth number 21 which has a 350 metres quay length and 15 metres deep capable of accommodating post panama vessels of 8,000 TEU capacity.
The President will also commission some infrastructural projects in Kilifi County. Reports indicate that apart from the President’s formal duties, he will traverse the region to popularise the Jubilee Party which he will use to seek re-election in August next year.
He is also expected to tour Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi County where the outfit appears to have made political inroads. Notably, Cord rebel members led by Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung’aro are promising the President good tidings at the Coast after making ‘significant’ progress in popularising the party.
The President’s visit is likely to cause a stir in the Opposition stronghold with a number of ODM legislators are among those lined up to receive him when he comes to open the Showground.
At the same time, Likoni MP Masoud Mwahima who has since ditched Cord and publicly declared that he would vie on a Jubilee ticket, has said some of the ‘rebel’ leaders would be meeting with the President to give him a report on how Jubilee is performing as well as present to him a formula they have adopted to ensure the party wins seats in the region.
In a statement seen to be targeting Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Mwahima said rebel leaders are in Jubilee for keeps and that the President needs no permission to visit any part of the country.
