Orange Democratic Movement party leader Raila Odinga has assured his supporters that there will be no direct nominations for candidates vying for various seats during the 2017 General Election.

He also warned party leadership wrangles in the grassroots could make ODM lose key seats. He asked supporters to reject advances by Jubilee, saying the administration had failed to fulfil promises made during the 2013 elections.

He said with the planned exit of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners, the country is ready to face the next election with hope that the poll will be free and fair. “We said IEBC must go; have they gone or not?

We have put in place plans to makes sure every Kenya who has attained the age of 18 get identity and voting cards so as to participate in next year’s polls,” Raila added.

Speaking in Ukunda, Kwale county, where he opened party offices, Raila said ODM asked aspirants its tickets to vie for various seats to prepare themselves for elections to qualify to be the party flag bearers.

“Let all 2017 election candidates know there will be no direct nominations for anyone. Everyone should campaign and work hard to win support of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, A group of university students has asked Raila to abandon his presidential quest and instead support a youthful leader in the Cord fraternity.

At a press conference in Nairobi, their University Students Network union leader Geoffrey Mosiria said although Raila has done a lot for the country, particularly on political liberation, it was time he hang his boots in favour of a youthful leader.
