Mothers, including those living positively, have been advised to breast feed their new-born babies exclusively for six months.
Coast General Provincial Hospital (CPGH) Director of Nursing Elizabeth Kivuva said as long as HIV positive women are introduced to anti-retroviral treatment, the infant is safe from infection.
“Initially there were myths surrounding the virus but recent research in medical fields have shown women living positively can breast feed,” she said.
At the same time, CPGH Deputy Administrator Victor Onjom (pictured) who was speaking while marking the World Breastfeeding Week, urged employers to facilitate the practice in line with the Millennium Development goals by allowing new mothers a four-month leave.
“We urge employers to stick to the guidelines set by the government, we want to ensure every child grows healthy and strong,” he said.
