Some of Kenya’s most promising talents will be showcased at the 90th edition of Kenya National Music Festival which kicked off at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi yesterday.

Thousands of participants from primary and secondary schools and colleges trickled to the stadium for the 11-day event whose theme is ‘Nurturing innovative competencies for economic prosperity’.

The festival, which was opened by Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Education Director at the Ministry of Education Leah Rotich, began with Pupils from lower primary and nursery schools presenting African singing games, English choral and solo verses, accompanied set piece and arrangements of African tune and pianoforte solo.

Nairobi police boss Japheth Koome said security had been tightened to ensure safety at the event. His team, he said, would be escorting participants back to their counties after performing. “We have been holding security meetings mainly to address security coverage for this event.

This time, we are not taking any chances. We have deployed officers in the entire county because we want to be thorough and do the right thing,” said Koome. Rotich told People Daily that the event is meant to tap talents from participants and develop academic and co-curricular abilities.

“Music is party of co-curricular activities and we except our children to not only prosper in academic work but also in their untapped talents. We want to develop our children wholesomely. We believe their emotions will be controlled to curb cases of school unrests,” said Rotich.

The festival’s chairman Peter Wanjohi said the outcome of this year’s event is expected to assist the government in devising policies and programmes geared towards harnessing innovation and artistic talent as economic venture.

“Music and related artistic renditions are to be showcased as avenues for promoting the advancement of talented and innovative youth, particularly in employment creation,” he said.
