Ten Chinese rail workers who were attacked by rowdy youth in Narok on Tuesday have been discharged from hospital. However, four who sustained serious injuries when Maasai youth, armed with rungus, machetes and other crude weapons, raided their camp at Duka Moja area are still admitted at Narok Referral Hospital.

The more than 200 youth descended on the workers, chanting slogans.  The local youth have been demanding a share of the Standard Gauge Railway jobs. The SGR project is being undertaken by a Chinese company.

County Police Commander Abdi Galgalo condemned the attack and said Chinese and other rail workers will be provided with round-the-clock security.

He said they are still pursuing the assailants, who also injured two journalists covering the chaos.  “They attacked the camp with the aim of flushing out non-Maasais, not just Chinese nationals,” said Galgalo, adding:” But we are hunting for them.”
